Marketing Comparison: The 2008 Brady Quinn
Other Brady fans have probably noticed that there is a ton of criticism towards Brady in with regards to his endorsement contracts. These people, who obviously aren’t very bright or rational, don’t realize that a lot these deals are signed shortly after athletes sign with an agent.
Those who get these deals are usually the ones who are the most marketable. In comparison to other players in the 2007 rookie class, one can argue that no other player has nearly as much salability as Mr. Quinn. That’s what drives these deals, and that’s why he’s so sought after. Companies don’t wait until the middle of the season to sit down and decide who’s played well thus far, offer them a contract, and then film commercials/photoshoots and make appearances.
If I had a quarter for every time I’ve read “Has he even played a down?” or “What has he done to deserve these deals?” I could buy Browns season tickets.
So I’d just like to point out that Virgina DE Chris Long has not even been drafted and he already has reported deals with Subway, Hummer, and NIKE — just like Brady last year — as well as Sprint. No, his agent isn’t also Tom Condon. Tom’s been busy getting the contract for #1 2008 pick Jake Long finalized.
So my question is where are all of the people who have and still are complaining about Brady now? My guess is that we won’t hear a peep of condemnation about Long. He must be different…

There are two things that I think add fuel to the fire, as far as the (unwarranted!!!) criticism of Brady and his endorsements are concerned… First, there are a lot of Notre Dame haters out there. So of course they’re going to scoff at anything even remotely Irish related, particularly when it’s a Domer making good for himself (Seriously, if any of those who were making the snide remarks were offered a ton of money to pitch some products even if they hadn’t done anything spectacular with themselves at the time, do you think THEY’D turn it down? I think not.) And also, it’s a case of “Don’t hate him because he’s beautiful.” Unfortunately, many do, I believe.
April 24th, 2008 at 5:56 amVery nice entry Suz! Love the word “salability.” If if weren’t for the potentiality of Brady’s professional football fame, his success as a collegiate athlete, the hype and dare I say “hysteria” over him (ask Steph
), and, of course, his Adonis aura I would not have been able to meet him in New Jersey because the Sports Show executives would not have signed him. Not to mention everyone loves to hate the NICE GUY, and anyone who has met Brady, knows Brady, interviewed Brady, heard about Brady KNOWS he is “THE” nicest guy!
There is something to say about the man who can cause this and something to say to the naysayers.
Brady– It is just the tip of the iceberg. I would not be surprised if we see the same marketing as the 70s Bruce Jenner appeal.
Naysayers– Jealousy is so unbecoming.
