No 2008 QB Controversy?
Phil Savage just loves stirring the pot. Or at least that’s what I feel like he’s doing. [LINK]
With all the question marks leading into the off-season concerning the quarterback position, Savage decided to make a bold statement: Derek Anderson is the 2008 starting quarterback.
I understand that we are all pleased with DA’s performance this year, after taking over the starting position from Charlie Frye, but to proclaim that he is the starter before seeing what transpires during the team’s camp (remember, Brady missed a significant portion this season with this holdout) seems a tad premature. Many writers still speculate that Brady may have won the starting position had he attended the full camp.
So with one season under his belt (primarily on the sidelines) to feel out the speed of the game and grasp the playbook, is Savage suggesting that there is still no way Brady can compete with Derek this spring/summer and win the starter job? Shouldn’t all QBs on the roster be given the chance to compete for that job? And if so, what happened to all that “quarterback of the future” talk, Phil?
The good part of Savage’s comments to the media was his insistence that both Brady and Derek are essentially “off the market” in terms of trade scenarios. That’s good news! After signing Ken Dorsey to a contract extension, it makes sense to keep these 3 as the Cleveland Browns Quarterbacks and continue to build and grow with them.
EXTRA POINTS:
Congratulations to Joe Thomas for being added to the Pro Bowl roster!

If the Browns trade Brady, I will seriously cry. Alot of the Derek supporters say Quinn is unproven, and Anderson is, well, why don’t they give Quinn a chance to prove himself. It really irritates me. Brady is not going to want to sit on the bench for a second straight season! I want to see him play! I say sign Anderson for one year, and have Quinn and Anderson battle at training camp..
January 9th, 2008 at 7:10 pmOne good[not that good in my eyes] season for Anderson doesn’t make him the best quarterback ever.
*stifles cry of anguish*
….Okay. So Anderson had what can be considered a breakout year. A good story, yes… I always enjoy seeing a player emerge from seemingly out of nowhere to show everyone what he’s got! (I say this in spite of me experiencing massive Brady withdrawals this football season, LOL) HOWEVER… I find it very hard to believe that Brady won’t even get a chance to start! I truly believe that he is good enough to be a starter, it irritates me to think that he won’t even get a chance to prove that. Just gotta remember that training camp is months away… A lot can happen before, and even during then.
On a more personal level… As a Notre Dame fan, I had the absolute pleasure of watching Brady for four years. I, of course, enjoyed every moment of it.
So it’s been hard for me to go from that to barely getting even so much as a glimpse of him at all! (ND stinking up the place this year made it that much more difficult for me, but that’s a whole other rant…:P) So… THIS happy little story is not good for my mental well-being at all, you guys….LOL!
January 9th, 2008 at 7:28 pmOh, my, god. If they trade Brady I will cry and have to get rid of his Browns jersey for his new team and become a Browns fan AND the Brady’s new team fan.
But here’s the ting: They won’t/can’t trade him. They spent too much on him so it would make NO sense to trade him. We gave up a lot to Dallas, and the only reason he didn’t play this year was because of the whole missin’ training camp days.
Now, we don’t know what went on during practice. Brady could TOTALLY be out throwing DA, and probably is!
BUt, again, we don’t know this.
We won’t…we CAN’T get rid of Brady! He is our future, and DA is a good second string QB. Not the best first. He didn’t, in my opionion play like a starter at all. He wasn’t consistant. And that is what you gotta be when a QB. From what I saw with Brady, he was pretty consistant.
But, I, as a 14 going on 15 year old girl know nothing about being a coach in the NFL, now do I?;)
Don’t sweat it, we can’t get rid of Brady. I hope we get rid of DA, though cuz I hated him the moment he stepped on the feild last year for my old home skillet Charlie Frye. We’ll see a lot of Brady this season. I just know it!
January 9th, 2008 at 7:43 pmGuys, they’re not trading Brady. Savage made that clear. All 3 current guys will be around; at least for the next season. I think after the ‘08 season, they’ll have to sit down and make some decisions, but don’t start panicking about Brady being traded.
My beef –and reason for making this post– was due to Savage proclaiming DA the starter without taking into consideration how each may perform in the off-season and the summer training camps. That just doesn’t make sense. After the QB battle in camps this year, I think he, of all people, should expect another one. I can see DA getting the most snaps with the 1st team in camp, but that isn’t a guarantee that he’ll be the one to come out of camp on top after all is said and done.
We’ll have to see how this shakes out. I don’t buy for a second that he can just up and make a statement like that. He’s not the coach.
January 9th, 2008 at 9:08 pmI agree with the admin. At the end of the last training camp (august 2007) it was Romeo’s decision… period. Romeo said matter of factly, the was not going to reward Brady the quarterback position because he held out during negotations. Sadly, i have to agree with him on that; so Brady was placed 43th string quarterback. I also don’t know why Savage said that Derel would start seven months from now except to stop people from hounding him about the quarterbacks. The organization has stated they are pretty much tired of questions about the quarterbacks.
I am very relieved to hear that Brady is staying. He is just one collarbone break of Derek’s to play the whole season. This actually happened to Matt Leinart. Played one game (or two) and then out the WHOLE season. This may in fact be a “good” thing, because the schedule for the next season has a lot of BIG named teams up against Cleveland with BIG Defensive lines at the START of the season. Let Derek take those sacks - then get our man in there.
This is one reason why I like going to PRE-season games because Brady will play then.
One more thing. There was also a quarterback from Notre Dame by the name of JOE MONTANA who also DID NOT play very much at all his first two years… and just look at what became of him! I say history will repeat itself. I think we are all going through a small Brady withdrawal
January 10th, 2008 at 7:45 amYeah, just a tiny Brady qithdrawl that has already dirven me CRAZY!
January 10th, 2008 at 11:58 amThat thought occurred to me, too… That maybe Savage did that to attempt to discourage any more questions regarding the quarterback position. And it may work… For a while. There’s no doubt in my mind that the questions will resurface during training camp, if not before, because the sports media LOVES a good QB battle/controversy!
One thing that’s for sure… All of this talk will not discourage Brady one bit. If anything, it’ll make him work as hard as ever to do everything he can to get the chance he deserves.
January 10th, 2008 at 5:00 pmch-yeh.. i need a Brady fix… bad…
