Crennel Won’t Name Frye Backup QB

The Cleveland BrownsOfficial word came down yesterday that Charlie Frye will indeed be the starting quarterback for the season opener against Pittsburgh.

But the mystery that has been surrounding the Browns QB battle continued as Crennel declined to name a backup for Frye. Fan and media speculation will continue as Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn continue to compete for the backup spot in the QB depth chart. “Everybody else is a backup,” Crennel told the media. “I don’t have to name anybody second or third until 1 1/2 hours before the game. Whoever is second or third doesn’t make any difference. If Charlie goes down and the next guy goes in, he is the starter.”

In addition the QB position will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis, which adds more uncertaintly to the position. “It doesn’t do me any good to say a guy’s the starter for the whole year,” Crennel explained. “Every position, I’ve told them, is not set in stone. Roles change.”

Stay tuned for the next chapter of the Cleveland Browns quarterback saga!
